Between Fundamentalism and Stupidity

Having religious beliefs and living following them is a fact to respect. Relying on religious beliefs to reject treatment, if it is not idiotic is stupid or both at the same time, that said with all the respect that true believers deserve me. They say and it seems proven that faith heals or helps to heal and there are even studies that show this and that also show that believers can use this "force" to improve their health situation. But from that to the rejection of treatment there is a real abyss.
What happened to me yesterday reminded me of another case, less dramatic, but real. Many years ago a nun went for pelvic sonography, in which we showed that she had a degenerative uterine myomatosis, of many years of evolution. Before I recommended Surgery due to the severe pain and profuse bleeding, she responded with a challenge: She said that she would return in a year with the fibroid removed by the action of her prayers to the holy spirit. I, between half surprised and half-amused, accepted the challenge. The following year she appeared again, without pain and with little bleeding (according to her), of course, the myomatous process was still there, she had even had a greater growth of the uterus in the past year, but as the nun "felt better" although She was not cured or her myomatosis had not been eliminated, I had to tell her to do what she thought was most convenient since her firmness and resistance to surgery was almost total, there was no other option.
Yesterday's case was the following: A patient of Pakistani origin, diagnosed with AIDS for 18 years, decides to stop the anti-retroviral treatment to be cured by his Muslim religion. As a result of that, AIDS resurfaces in full force, the platelets and in general, all the blood cells collapse (pan-cytopenia), causes right hemiplegia with seizures due to cerebral hemorrhage in the left parietal region.
In the sonographic examination: moderate hepatomegaly of 17 cm (normal up to 15 cm), single cholelithiasis, and an enormous splenomegaly of 1982 c.c. volume (as we see in the sonographic image of this post)
